By Steve Brand | February 14, 2018
Starting out in the maritime industry can be daunting and with so many qualifications on the market it can be difficult to know where to start.
To make things simple we’ve created this article that includes the course information you need to prepare for an exciting career in your dream job.
What is STCW?
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. The worldwide convention ensures a high standard of training is achieved across the globe.
The main purpose of the convention is to promote safety of life and property whilst at sea. It also protects the marine environment by establishing international standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers.
Who needs it?
The STCW Basic Safety Training course (STCW 95/STCW 2010) is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 metres, in accordance with section A-V1/1 of the STCW. This includes superyachts, cruise ships and other commercial ships.
You do not need any prior experience or knowledge to complete this course but do need to be over the age of 16.
What is covered in the course?
The course covers all the basics you need to work on a commercial vessel. You can also do complete each topic individually if required.
